TA’ZIZ Low-Carbon Ammonia Project in Abu Dhabi Advances with Construction Contract Award

Fertiglobe, a strategic partnership formed between ADNOC and OCI Company, has achieved a momentous milestone by awarding a construction contract to Tecnimont, a prominent business unit within the MAIRE Group, for the groundbreaking TA’ZIZ low-carbon ammonia production facility in Abu Dhabi. This heralds a new era of sustainable industrial development in the region, signaling a bold commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.

The announcement of the contract award was made during the prestigious Make it in the Emirates forum on May 28, 2024, serving as a testament to TA’ZIZ’s unwavering dedication to driving economic growth and technological advancement in Abu Dhabi and beyond. Notably, a significant portion of the construction award value is anticipated to circulate back into the UAE’s economy under the auspices of ADNOC’s In-Country Value (ICV) program, further fortifying local industries and fostering economic resilience.

Scheduled to commence construction in the third quarter of 2024, with operations slated to commence in 2027, the TA’ZIZ low-carbon ammonia production facility embodies the pinnacle of sustainability and technological innovation. This ambitious timeline underscores TA’ZIZ’s steadfast commitment to accelerating the transition towards low-carbon energy solutions while upholding the highest standards of operational excellence and environmental responsibility.

A preliminary life cycle assessment study has unveiled that Phase 1 of the plant will pioneer a paradigm shift by producing ammonia with a staggering 50% lower carbon intensity compared to conventional methods. Moreover, in subsequent phases, the facility will harness cutting-edge technologies to further reduce carbon emissions through the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide, epitomizing TA’ZIZ’s unwavering dedication to environmental conservation and climate action.

Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, the visionary CEO of TA’ZIZ, underscored the pivotal role of ammonia as a key transition fuel in charting a course towards a sustainable future. He emphasized the multifaceted benefits of ammonia, which extends beyond its traditional applications to encompass a wide array of energy solutions, positioning it as a linchpin in the global energy transition.

Al-Kindi reiterated TA’ZIZ’s steadfast commitment to bolstering local industry supply chains, advancing the principles of In-Country Value (ICV), and catalyzing manufacturing capabilities within the UAE, all while championing the cause of sustainability. The TA’ZIZ low-carbon ammonia production facility stands as a shining testament to TA’ZIZ’s overarching mission of driving sustainable industrial growth and fostering inclusive prosperity in Abu Dhabi and beyond.

It is noteworthy that TA’ZIZ had previously forged a landmark shareholder agreement with Fertiglobe, GS Energy Corporation, and Mitsui & Co, signaling a collaborative effort to spearhead the development of the low-carbon ammonia production facility at the TA’ZIZ Industrial Chemicals Zone in Abu Dhabi in early 2023. This transformative partnership underscores the shared commitment of industry leaders to advancing sustainable development goals and propelling innovation within the region’s industrial landscape.
