UAE’s First Lithium Battery Recycling Plant Announced

Emirates to launch a cutting-edge recycling facility by 2027, saving 20,000 tonnes of emissions annually and boosting EV growth

UAE’s First Lithium Battery Recycling Plant Set to Drive Sustainability

The UAE’s first lithium battery recycling plant is expected to save 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

The second quarter of 2027 will see the complete operation of the first lithium battery recycling facility in the United Arab Emirates.

The project, a joint venture between Vital Gulf Industries, a unit of Singapore-based Vital Group of Companies, and state-backed Cassatt Group, could recycle 5,000 tonnes of battery waste annually by 2027.

The plant is expected to save around 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually in line with the UAE’s Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031 and its net zero target by 2050.

The facility will support the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by promoting renewable energy storage, reducing the carbon footprint of battery manufacturing, and promoting innovative carbon capture technologies and material recovery methods.

Sukumaran Devarajah, consultant, Vital Gulf Industries, said the company is already involved in the battery trading division and supply that goes into battery manufacturing.

He said the project will accelerate the growth of the EV sector.

In May, UAEV, a joint venture between the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Etihad Water and Power, announced plans to build a network of high-efficiency EV chargers across the seven emirates.

Earlier this year, Californian commercial EV maker HummingbirdEV said it plans to set up a micro factory in the UAE.
