UAE expresses concern over escalating crisis in the DRC

The UAE has expressed serious concern about events in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where an armed rebel group has taken control of a strategic town in the country’s eastern area, escalating a decades-old conflict.

Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan urged adherence to the ceasefire struck between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda in August, emphasizing the need of maintaining the DRC’s security and territorial integrity.

The official also denounced the killing of numerous UN peacekeepers stationed in the region.

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels stormed Goma, the largest city in the east, on Wednesday, in the latest escalation of the fighting with the Congolese military.

According to local officials, at than 200 civilians and 14 peacekeepers were killed in regions held by the M23 rebels.
