Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, visited the National Children’s Hospital in Washington DC and explained its pioneering work in pediatric surgery and healthcare.
The UAE has long supported the hospital, and His Highness’s most recent visit demonstrates its ongoing dedication to enhancing the care given to the institution’s pediatric patients. The UAE donated $150 million to the hospital to establish the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, and an additional $30 million was pledged to support the opening of the Children’s National Research and Innovation Complex.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed visited many specialized hospital sections and spoke with medical professionals and top officials during his tour. The briefing included details of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit Command Center, which uses sophisticated artificial intelligence techniques to monitor patients and early identify critical events such as cardiac arrest. The command center allows surgeons and cardiologists to share telemedicine consultations with doctors around the world, including the UAE field hospital in Abu Dhabi and Gaza.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed also learned about the latest innovations developed at the Sheikh Zayed Institute, including a miniature pacemaker designed for babies and children. His Highness first saw a prototype of the pacemaker in 2019, and today, thanks to an investment from the United Arab Emirates, the device has been used in more than 40 pediatric patients, including five newborns.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed visited the Emirati children receiving treatment at the hospital and spoke to them and their families to check on their health and progress. He wished the young patients a speedy recovery and prayed they would be able to return home soon, stressing the UAE’s commitment to protecting the health of its people.
The children and their families expressed gratitude for the visit of the UAE President and the care they receive.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed was accompanied by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Adviser on Special Affairs of the Presidential Court; Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Head of the Presidential Office for Strategic Affairs at the Presidential Court, and Youssef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
