Dubai’s Heritage Safeguarded: Sheikh Hamdan Launches Phase Two of Preservation Project

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has recently announced the initiation of the next phase in an ambitious and wide-ranging project aimed at preserving and safeguarding the rich cultural and architectural heritage of the city. This second phase of the project represents a significant step forward in the ongoing effort to ensure that Dubai’s historical sites, buildings, and areas are maintained for the benefit of present and future generations.

At the heart of this phase lies the preservation of 35 key areas, sites, and buildings that hold immense historical and cultural significance, spanning from the 1960s to the 1990s. These landmarks include a diverse array of structures, from iconic buildings like the Jumeirah Zoo and the Clock Tower to administrative complexes such as the Dubai Municipality’s main building and the Dubai Courts building. Each of these sites has played a pivotal role in shaping Dubai’s identity and narrative, representing important milestones in the city’s journey of growth and development.

In a statement issued by the Dubai Government Media Office, Sheikh Hamdan underscored the importance of celebrating Dubai’s history and protecting its architectural treasures. The second phase of the project builds upon the success of the initial phase, which saw the preservation of 17 archaeological sites, 14 historical areas, and 741 buildings. With the addition of 35 new heritage sites and buildings, the total number of preserved landmarks under the project is set to reach an impressive 807. Dawoud Al Hajri, the director general of Dubai Municipality, echoed Sheikh Hamdan’s sentiments, emphasizing the significance of the sites and buildings included in the second phase.
