Sharjah Police Chief Launches Modern Prison Libraries to Promote Inmate Rehabilitation

A Transformative Initiative for Intellectual Growth

His Excellency Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, has officially inaugurated four modern libraries at the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre in collaboration with Knowledge Without Borders. By encouraging a culture of reading and lifelong learning in a rehabilitative environment, this program aims to enhance the intellectual and educational growth of prisoners.

Improving Knowledge and Learning Access


Prominent individuals attended the event, including senior police officials and representatives, H.E.
H.E. Mohammed Khalaf, Director-General of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority and Sharjah Media Council member, and Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association.

Major General bin Amer visited the newly constructed libraries during the inauguration. These libraries have a vast range of books, from best-sellers to educational materials catered to the interests and learning requirements of the prisoners. In addition to Dar Al Aman Nursery, which assists imprisoned mothers and their children, the library have a special women’s section.

Major General bin Amer underscored the significance of this initiative as part of Sharjah Police’s broader commitment to rehabilitation through education. He highlighted how access to literature and information can help prisoners reintegrate into society by fostering their psychological well-being, skill development and personal growth.

Rehabilitation through cultural engagement and education

Major General Bin Amer commended the efforts of the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation system, and praised its forward-thinking strategy. He underlined that the new libraries are an important part of this effort, by providing offenders with a structured educational framework, professional development opportunities and intellectual stimulation.

Colonel Abdullah Alai Al Naqbi, Director of the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre, explained that the library spaces were designed based on specialized research to ensure they provide a welcoming and engaging environment, distinct from conventional prison libraries. This creative method inspires prisoners to use reading as a means of personal growth and development.

Acknowledging Cultural Development Contributions


H.E. Mohammed Khalaf and H.E. Rashid Al Kous were recognized by Major General bin Amer at the end of the ceremony for their crucial contributions to intellectual and cultural endeavors in Sharjah.
Their work has been essential in building a knowledge-driven society and bolstering the criminal justice system’s educational and rehabilitation tenets.

By incorporating education into inmate rehabilitation programs, this effort strengthens the UAE’s mission to empower people, protect their rights, and get them ready for a smooth transition back into society.
