Saudi Arabia: No Repeat Umrah Permits in Ramadan

In Cairo, Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step to alleviate congestion during the holy month of Ramadan by implementing a measure aimed at reducing the repetition of Umrah, or minor pilgrimage, in Mecca. With Ramadan, a period of heightened spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide, already underway, the Grand Mosque in Mecca typically experiences a surge in Umrah pilgrims seeking to perform their religious duties at Islam’s holiest site.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has clarified that it will not issue permits for individuals to perform two or more Umrahs during Ramadan. Instead, worshippers are urged to undertake only one lesser pilgrimage during this sacred period. This proactive measure is intended to address overcrowding concerns, provide equal opportunities for all worshippers to perform Umrah, and enhance crowd management strategies within the holy precincts.

According to reports from a Saudi newspaper, Nusuk, a government platform facilitating Umrah procedures electronically, will display a message indicating that permit issuance has failed if an individual attempts to obtain a permit for a second Umrah. The message will emphasize that the repetition of the lesser pilgrimage during Ramadan is not permitted, emphasizing the importance of equitable access for all worshippers.

Umrah, a pilgrimage that holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims, sees a substantial influx of pilgrims, both domestic and international, during Ramadan. To accommodate the anticipated increase in pilgrim traffic, Saudi authorities have implemented various measures to ensure a seamless and comfortable experience for worshippers.

During Ramadan, specific areas of the Grand Mosque, including the circumambulation courtyard around the Holy Kaaba and the ground floor, are designated exclusively for Umrah pilgrims. Additionally, specific gates of the mosque have been allocated for pilgrims’ entry and exit, strategically managing crowd flow and minimizing congestion within the sacred precincts.

In recent months, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has introduced several facilitative measures to streamline the Umrah experience for overseas Muslims. Individuals holding various types of entry visas, including personal, visit, and tourism visas, are permitted to undertake Umrah and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, the revered site of Prophet Mohammad’s tomb at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, after scheduling an e-appointment.

Furthermore, in a bid to enhance the convenience and flexibility of Umrah pilgrimage, Saudi authorities have extended the duration of the Umrah visa from 30 days to 90 days. This extension provides pilgrims with an extended timeframe to perform their religious rites and engage in spiritual activities, further enriching their experience of this sacred journey.
