Saudi Arabia Launches Humanitarian Air Bridge to Syria Amid Ongoing Crisis
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia launched a humanitarian air bridge to Syria on Wednesday, delivering food, shelter and medical supplies, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
The air bridge, set up by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), aims to “alleviate the effects of the difficult conditions currently facing the Syrian people,” SPA said.
Other organizations, including the European Union and Ukraine, have announced aid in Syria, where the United Nations estimates that seven in ten people need assistance.
As KSrelief, SPA President Abdullah al-Rabiah said, the Riyadh airlift “will be followed by another landlift in the coming days.”
A 13-year civil conflict and Western sanctions against the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad have left Syria in ruins.
A World Health Organization inspector reported this week that about half of the nation’s hospitals are not operating, and millions of people have been displaced as a result of the collapse of the economy and civil infrastructure.
A source close to the Saudi government said earlier that a high-level Saudi delegation had traveled to Damascus to meet with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham led the December 8 overthrow of Assad, after a lightning strike.
Riyadh previously sent aid to Syria after the February 2023 earthquake.
