Pahalgam terror attack: Former UAE Indian from Kerala among 26 killed in Kashmir

Tragic Kashmir shooting claims life of N. Ramachandran; daughter recounts harrowing escape with twin sons

Kerala Man, Former UAE Expat, Among Victims of Pahalgam Terror Attack in Kashmir

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a former Indian expatriate from the UAE, N. Ramachandran, originally from Kerala, was among the 26 victims killed in the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The tragedy unfolded during what was meant to be a joyful family trip.

Ramachandran, who had returned to Kerala from Dubai several years ago and had since become involved in local politics, was traveling with his daughter, Arathi Ramachandran, and her twin sons. Arathi had recently moved from Dubai back to India and shared a chilling first-hand account of the attack in a televised interview.

She described how the family was enjoying outdoor activities in Pahalgam’s scenic hilltop zone—filled with tourists and attractions—when gunfire erupted. The sound was initially mistaken for firecrackers, but Arathi soon understood they were being attacked and told her father and kids to lie down. Ramachandran was shot at close range by a shooter who also threatened Arathi. She was miraculously spared, as did her sons.

With the assistance of locals, she fled the location barefoot over mud and rugged terrain in search of safety. Eventually, she sought refuge at a nearby hotel, where the staff provided safety and support. Despite being unable to return to the scene of the incident, Arathi was contacted that evening to identify her father’s body.
She was incredibly appreciative of the Kashmiris in the area who supported her during the tragedy, particularly the two drivers, Sameer and Muzaffar, whom she now views as family. She also expressed gratitude to the Indian government and local authorities for their help.

Arathi made a heartfelt effort to keep her distraught mother, who was also traveling but in the hotel when the attack occurred, in the dark about her husband’s passing until they had safely returned to Kochi. Throughout their trip, she made every effort to protect her from the press and news coverage.
On Wednesday evening, Ramachandran’s body arrived in Kochi, where it was accepted by locals and government officials. On Friday, his funeral is planned. He was a committed BJP supporter, according to sources, and has previously run in municipal elections. He is expected to run again later this year.

In addition to making a holiday into a nightmare, the tragedy has left the family with a lifelong scar and serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing difficulties with safety in areas that are prone to violence.
