UAE offers free desalination units to aid Cyprus’ summer water needs
Emergency water support from the UAE helps Cyprus face water shortages and plant outage

UAE Donates Mobile Desalination Plants to Help Cyprus Tackle Summer Water Shortage
Cyprus is experiencing a serious summer water crisis, so the United Arab Emirates has stepped in to help. The UAE is providing free portable desalination units in response to Cyprus’ pressing demand. The 15,000 cubic meters of fresh water produced daily by these units will assist make up for the deficiency brought on by a broken local desalination plant.
As the tourism season gets underway, Cyprus, which depends heavily on tourism and is now dealing with extremely low water reservoir levels following one of the driest winters in a decade, welcomed the help. The aid follows months of discreet diplomatic discussions and highlights the growing ties between the two nations. President Nikos Christodoulides praised the agreement as a product of Cyprus’ strengthened international relationships, especially with the UAE.
The donated desalination units will temporarily fill the gap left by one of Cyprus’ five onshore plants, which is offline until August due to fire damage. For optimal performance, technical teams are now determining the best sites to install the portable systems.
In addition to this emergency assistance, Cyprus is engaged in long-term water conservation measures. Plans are underway to build two more permanent facilities in the coming years and to purchase four new mobile desalination units by the autumn. Since the government recognizes the importance of water supply in maintaining tourism, which accounts for 13.5% of the nation’s GDP, it is also offering incentives for the construction of private desalination units in hotels.
Cyprus is at a crucial point in its summer preparations, with reservoirs running at less than 25% full and over 4 million tourists expected in 2024. The UAE’s prompt aid is assisting Cyprus in overcoming this challenging time.
