New Zealand and UAE Initiate Free Trade Talks

New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken a significant step forward in their economic relations with the announcement of negotiations for a free trade agreement. This milestone was marked by a meeting between New Zealand’s Minister for Trade, Todd McClay, and UAE’s Trade Minister Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, held in Dubai.

Acknowledging the UAE’s pivotal role as a bilateral partner, McClay underscored its importance as a major export destination and a central hub in the Gulf region. He emphasized the vast potential for collaboration across various sectors, particularly in agriculture and sustainable energy, highlighting the breadth of opportunities for deepening economic ties between the two nations.

McClay emphasized the tangible benefits that a high-quality trade agreement could bring, noting its potential to stimulate New Zealand’s economy and unlock new avenues for exports. He stressed that increased access to the UAE market would not only fuel economic growth but also contribute to elevating domestic incomes and alleviating the cost of living for New Zealanders.

Furthermore, McClay underscored the strategic significance of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UAE, emphasizing its alignment with New Zealand’s broader trade objectives. He noted that such an agreement would complement the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), reflecting New Zealand’s commitment to fostering robust trade relations across the Gulf region.

The launch of negotiations reflects the shared commitment of both countries to deepening economic cooperation and forging a mutually beneficial partnership. As discussions progress, stakeholders anticipate the establishment of a robust framework that will facilitate seamless trade and investment flows, driving sustainable economic growth and prosperity for both New Zealand and the UAE.
