Neom’s Trojena: A Saudi Winter Wonderland Emerging in the Heart of the Desert

In a visionary move that challenges stereotypes, Saudi Arabia is giving shape to a winter wonderland within the mountains of Neom, the €461 billion ($500 billion) ‘city of the future.’ This groundbreaking urban project, nestled in the northwest region of the country in the province of Tabuk, will be home to the extraordinary ski resort named Trojena.

Blending Nature and Innovation: Trojena promises an enchanting blend of real and virtual architecture, featuring a sprawling ski resort, a man-made lake, and captivating views. Contrary to expectations, skiing in the arid landscape of Saudi Arabia becomes a reality in Neom, where winter temperatures naturally drop below freezing. Clark Williams, the Manager of Marketing and Communication for Neom, emphasizes that achieving the required -3 degrees Celsius for snow is easily attainable for three months each year.

Sustainable Skiing: Trojena’s commitment to sustainable tourism extends to its snowmaking process. By minimizing water use and maximizing recovery, the resort aims to utilize renewable resources such as solar and wind power. The integration of water from the desalination plant and efficient water recirculation further underscores Trojena’s eco-friendly approach.

Year-Round Attractions: Beyond its winter allure, Trojena transforms into a multi-seasonal destination. In the remaining months, visitors can indulge in watersports on the man-made lake, and mountain biking activities. The resort strategically positions itself as a haven in the scorching Gulf summers, offering a temperature 10 degrees lower than other Saudi cities and a humidity-free environment.

A Complete Alpine Experience: Trojena seeks to encapsulate the essence of a classic mountain village within a single building. From restaurants to a luxury wellness spa, the ski resort aims to provide a comprehensive alpine experience. Several hotels are part of the plan, ready to host visitors when Trojena opens its doors in late 2026 or early 2027.

A Vertical Village with Permanent Residents: Expected to be home to about 7,000 permanent residents, Trojena transcends being a mere tourist attraction. The vertical village concept integrates living spaces, work environments, and recreational facilities.

Neom’s Ambitious Megaproject: Trojena is a pivotal component of Neom, which comprises four major parts. The project aligns with Saudi Crown Prince’s Vision 2030, focusing on sustainable development. Neom aspires to be 100% powered by clean energy, with 95% of its territory reserved for nature. The grand vision includes the Sindalah luxury island, OXAGON floating industrial metropolis, and THE LINE, a sprawling city housing millions.

Forward-Looking Tourism: Niall Gibbons, Neom’s Head of Tourism, envisions Neom welcoming around 3.5 million tourists by 2030. The initial emphasis on local tourism will eventually expand to international visitors, with a target of 60% from outside Saudi Arabia by 2030. Neom’s commitment to environmental conservation is evident in ongoing rewilding projects, reintroducing wildlife such as oryx and ostriches to the desert.

Neom, with Trojena at its heart, stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s bold and innovative strides in shaping the future of urban living and tourism.
