Merlier Wins UAE Tour Sprint as Pogacar Holds Overall Lead
Tim Merlier, a Belgian sprinter, overcame obstacles to clinch a well-deserved victory in Friday’s fifth stage of the UAE Tour. Tadej Pogacar, meanwhile, maintained the lead overall with a forceful breakaway attempt.
Merlier Overcomes Challenges for Sprint Victory
Riding for Soudal Quick-Step, Merlier edged out Matteo Malucelli at the finish, while Jonathan Milan, winner of two previous sprint stages, settled for third.
Merlier’s victory came despite an untimely toilet break, which coincided with a surprise attack by Pogacar. The Belgian had to work hard to regain his position before starting the precisely timed run.
“We analyzed what went wrong yesterday and today we executed our plan perfectly,” said Merlier. “My team positioned me well in the final kilometers, and I was waiting for the right moment.”
Pogacar’s bold move shook up the race
UAE Team’s Tadej Pogacar rode the breakaway for more than 100km, gaining three bonus seconds to extend his lead over Josh Darling to 21 seconds.
“It wasn’t planned, but the opportunity came and I took advantage of it,” Pogacar explained.“Other riders joined in, and it became a breakaway.”
Late race and fast chase
The sprinting teams had to work hard to catch up as Pogacar’s lead grew past two minutes.
“I had just stopped for a break when Pogacar attacked,” Merlier stated, startled. To catch up, we had to put in a lot of effort.
Despite the difficulty, Merlier was able to secure a well-deserved victory because his team placed him in the ideal position.
