ICC Explores New Venues for 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup Amid Bangladesh Unrest
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is looking at other locations to host the forthcoming 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup due to the continuous political unrest and violence in Bangladesh. The October T20I championship match, which was originally supposed to take place in Bangladesh, is probably going to be moved outside of the nation.
The ICC had initially approached the BCCI to host the match, but the board secretary rejected the proposal ‘unexpectedly’ citing India’s monsoon season as well as the hosting of the ODI World Cup next year.
“They (ICC) asked us if we will host the World Cup. I have clearly said no. We are in the monsoon and beyond that we will be hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. “I don’t want to give any kind of indication that I want to have back-to-back World Cups,” BCCI’s Shah told Times of India.
Now according to the daily, the UAE has emerged as the top contender following India’s refusal. The region has three world-class stadiums in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
Apart from the UAE, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are also in the fray. The decision regarding the venue may be announced by this week.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was planning to approach the United Nations (UN) to retain the right to host the Women’s World Cup. The development came after several governments across the world, including India, England, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland, advised their citizens not to travel to Bangladesh in view of the ongoing violence in the country amid a coup.
According to various media reports, around 400 people have been killed in student-led demonstrations in Bangladesh.
10 countries will participate in the Women’s T20 World Cup which will start from October 3 with the final on October 20. 23 matches will be held in Dhaka and Sylhet.
