Empowering Inclusivity: SIB introduces screen reader service for visually challenged customers

Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) has taken a significant step towards inclusivity by introducing a screen reader in their mobile app, a first-of-its-kind service in the UAE. This development was prompted by a visually impaired customer who faced challenges while using the app. SIB collaborated closely with individuals with visual disabilities to create an interface that allows them to independently perform various banking transactions, ensuring privacy and security.
The initiative has received praise from organizations like Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) and experts in visual disabilities. Professor Dalia Abdel Moneim, a specialist at the city’s Early Intervention Center, emphasized the importance of empowering individuals with determination in all aspects of life.
SIB’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond this initiative, with previous efforts including the introduction of ATMs tailored for those with visual and mobility impairments. Waleed AlAmoudi, Head of Digital Banking at SIB, highlighted the bank’s dedication to implementing policies that empower individuals with disabilities and promote their active participation in society. This move aligns with the broader vision of the UAE government to create equal opportunities for all citizens.
