Eid-ul-Fitr 2025: Global Moon Sighting Updates and Official Announcements
Eid-ul-Fitr, the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is a joyous occasion marked by communal prayers, festive gatherings, and acts of kindness. The celebration begins with a special Eid prayer, followed by grand feasts, gift exchanges, and the wearing of new clothes.
Global Moon Sighting and Announcements
Bangladesh has officially declared Monday, March 31, 2025, as the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Indonesia was unable to sight the Shawwal crescent on March 29, 2025, leading to the confirmation that Eid will be observed on March 31. Malaysia has also announced March 31, 2025, as the first day of Eid, following a similar moon sighting outcome. Brunei has joined Indonesia and Malaysia in confirming March 31 as the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Australia’s Grand Mufti and the Australian Fatwa Council have declared that Ramadan 2025 will complete 30 days, making March 31, 2025, the first day of Eid based on astronomical calculations.
Saudi Arabia’s Moon Sighting Process
In Saudi Arabia, over 20 observatories are actively searching for the Shawwal crescent. The Supreme Court’s Crescent Committee will convene at 5:30 PM KSA time to analyze reports and confirm Eid’s official date.
International Astronomy Centre’s Statement
The International Astronomy Centre has confirmed that moon sighting on March 29 will be impossible across the Arab and Islamic world.
Eid-ul-Fitr on March 30 will not be possible because the Shawwal crescent will set before the sun and then come together after sunset.
The final announcement from other nations, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan, is widely anticipated, as other countries have already confirmed Eid for March 31, 2025.
