US President Joe Biden has recognized the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a “key defense partner”, deepening military ties amid tensions over the war in Sudan and deadly tensions in the Middle East.

Monday’s announcement follows a White House meeting between Biden and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, making the UAE the second country to receive the designation. The Biden administration has given India status in 2021.

The designation will further enhance defense cooperation and security in the Middle East, East Africa and Indian Ocean regions, the White House said in a statement.

It added that it will allow unprecedented cooperation between the military forces of the United States, the UAE and India and other common military partners through joint training, exercises and military-to-military cooperation. Regional Stability”.

The meeting comes in the context of Israel’s intensified attack on Lebanon. On Monday, 492 people, including 35 children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah military infrastructure.

“My team is in constant contact with their opponents and we are working to slow the escalation in a way that allows people to safely return to their homes,” Biden told reporters during a photo opportunity in the Oval Office.
