Abu Dhabi Police’s Police Legacy Department oversees the Al Maqta Iftar Cannon, which is a representation of the country’s long-standing Ramadan customs.

These cannons were originally used for defense, but as time went on, they changed to a ceremonial function, firing when the ruler gave the order and the Ramadan or Eid crescent was sighted. The region’s religious and cultural traditions are deeply rooted in this custom.

But the cannon blast that marks the end of the daily fast attracts people of all ages. Both residents and visitors can take advantage of this age-old tradition, which is a testament to the UAE’s rich cultural heritage and sense of community.

Lieutenant Colonel Ali Al Hammadi, Head of the Police Legacy Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, emphasized the significance of preserving history. He stated, “Abu Dhabi Police was among the first institutions to chronicle its journey. We have established a dedicated police heritage centre to safeguard the historical records of Abu Dhabi Police since its formation, while also documenting the broader security landscape. This centre plays a crucial role in showcasing the proud and honorable contributions of Abu Dhabi Police in maintaining safety and stability over the years.”

He further reflected on the historical importance of Al Maqta Tower, explaining how it symbolized Abu Dhabi’s growth. “Years ago, anyone traveling into or out of Abu Dhabi had to pass by Al Maqta Creek, where the tower stood as a landmark of security and strength. The presence of the cannon reassured them, instilling a deep sense of confidence and pride. Even today, the Al Maqta Iftar Cannon holds a special place in our hearts, evoking a unique sense of joy and nostalgia.”

Through this enduring tradition, Abu Dhabi continues to celebrate its cultural roots while bringing communities together in the spirit of Ramadan.
