UAE Leaders Congratulate Pope Leo XIV on Historic Election as First American Pope
UAE leaders have warmly congratulated Pope Leo XIV, the first American to be elected as the head of the Catholic Church, following his selection by 133 cardinals.
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his heartfelt congratulations through a cable to the new pope, wishing him success in his crucial role leading the global Catholic community. Messages of congratulations were also sent by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, along with His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court.
The congratulations were sent soon after Pope Leo XIV’s first public appearance—which was distinguished by the famous white smoke that announced his election—on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope to hold the office for twelve years, died last month. Pope Leo XIV takes over as pope. An important turning point in the history of the Catholic Church’s leadership was the election of Pope Leo XIV.
