Lebanon to Deport Egyptian Activist Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi to UAE

Lebanon’s cabinet has made the decision to deport Egyptian activist and poet Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al-Qaradawi, who was detained by Lebanese security forces after crossing into Lebanon from Syria last month, is known for his outspoken criticism of Egypt’s government. Prior to his detention, he had been living in Turkey.

His visit to Syria was allegedly planned by the organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to commemorate the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.

Youssef al-Qaradawi, a former Egyptian preacher associated with the Muslim Brotherhood who spent many years in exile in Qatar, is the father of Abdulrahman al-Qaradawi.

The younger al-Qaradawi is facing accusations in Egypt for inciting violence and disseminating false material, which carries a five-year prison sentence in absentia. He made a video in Damascus, which led to his imprisonment, according to Amnesty International.
