Moscow – Trade between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia has tripled over the past three years, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during a meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Moscow. Their discussions focused on boosting trade, addressing geopolitical issues, and exploring new areas of cooperation amid global challenges.

Trade Growth Despite Challenges

Despite global economic headwinds and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, trade between the UAE and Russia has surged. President Putin noted that bilateral investments now total $7 billion. However, both leaders acknowledged a slight decline in trade during the first seven months of 2024, committing to address the slowdown through renewed strategies.

Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with Russia, expressing confidence in the potential for long-term collaboration across key sectors.

Addressing Geopolitical Issues and Mediation Efforts

In addition to trade, the leaders discussed the Ukraine conflict and regional tensions. Putin praised the UAE’s role in facilitating a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the UAE’s diplomatic influence in international conflicts. Sheikh Mohamed reiterated the UAE’s stance on promoting peace through dialogue and cooperation.

The UAE’s balanced diplomacy allows it to maintain constructive relations with both Russia and Western nations, positioning it as a key mediator in global affairs.

Deepening Cooperation and Bilateral Investments

Both leaders explored opportunities to expand cooperation across various sectors, including energy, technology, and infrastructure. The UAE’s strategic location as a global trade hub and Russia’s economic diversification efforts align to create mutual benefits.

UAE’s Growing Role in Global Forums

Following the talks, Sheikh Mohamed will attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, underscoring the UAE’s increasing presence in global economic and political forums. The summit offers the UAE opportunities to expand partnerships and pursue sustainable development goals.

Strengthening UAE-Russia Relations for Stability

Beyond economic interests, the two leaders emphasized the importance of regional stability and security. Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the UAE’s commitment to fostering peace and preventing further escalation in the Middle East through cooperation with Russia and other global partners.

The meeting reaffirms the UAE and Russia’s dedication to deepening bilateral ties while addressing regional and global challenges. With trade at record levels and strategic cooperation expanding, both nations are well-positioned to navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics and achieve shared goals.
