Careem Bike Surpasses 7 Million Rides, Significantly Reducing Carbon Footprint in Dubai

Over 7 Million Bicycle Rides in Dubai Cut Carbon Emissions by 4 Million kg

Dubai’s Careem Bike Initiative: A Milestone in Sustainable Transportation Dubai has witnessed significant progress in sustainable transportation with over 7 million bicycle trips taken by residents and tourists in the past four years. This initiative, primarily facilitated by Careem Bike, has resulted in a remarkable reduction of more than 4 million kg of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 1,200 cars off the road.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Careem jointly announced that they have completed 7.35 million Careem Bike trips since the service’s launch in 2020.

Rising Demand for Bicycle Rides
Careem Bike has emerged as the largest pedal-assist bike-sharing network in the region, boasting 197 stations across Dubai’s extensive cycling network. The service currently offers approximately 1,800 bikes for rent. The demand for bike usage has surged, with users making over 2.3 million trips in 2023, reflecting a 66.3% increase compared to 2022. Notably, 76% of these trips were for first- and last-mile transportation, highlighting the growing reliance on bicycles for short-distance commutes.

User demographics and the longest recorded ride
The total distance traveled by Careem Bike riders since its launch is an astounding 28.4 million kilometers. Starting from Quranic Park in Al Khawaneej and ending at the Marina Promenade, the longest solo journey ever recorded was 48 kilometers long. It’s interesting to see that residents made up 68% of all trips, with tourists making up the remaining portion. This shows how well-liked the service is by both locals and tourists.

Dedication to Eco-Friendly Transportation
Reaching this milestone is in line with the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation and fostering a bicycle-friendly environment in Dubai, stressed Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s traffic and roads agency. In a similar vein, Bassel Al Nahlaoui, Managing Director of Mobility at Careem, observed the growing number of individuals choosing to ride bicycles in Dubai.

“We have extended Careem Bike throughout Dubai’s most well-known business districts, residential communities, and retail destinations thanks to our RTA partnership,” he said. Because of the RTA’s amazing support, Careem Bike has become the region’s top bike-sharing program in just four years.

Growth Outside of Dubai
Careem Bike was founded to encourage an active lifestyle and assist Dubai’s sustainability mission. Since then, it has extended its services to Abu Dhabi and Madinah, Saudi Arabia, with plans for additional regional expansion.

Simple Access for Users
The Careem Bike rental process is simple. On the home screen of the Careem app, users can choose the ‘Bike’ option. With the code RIDE50, new customers can get 50% off their first-day pass. For a little monthly charge of Dh19, Careem Plus customers can also take advantage of limitless 30% discount one-day passes.

With the growth of Careem Bike and its substantial impact on reducing carbon emissions, Dubai is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable transportation solutions while encouraging a healthier lifestyle among its residents and visitors. The ongoing expansion of bike-sharing services reflects the city’s progressive vision of a greener and more accessible urban environment.
