UAE’s New Traffic Rules: Three Actions That Can Result in Licence Suspension
Stricter Penalties and Licence Suspension for Violations

UAE Strengthens Traffic Laws to Enhance Road Safety and Enforce Regulations
The UAE has introduced an amended Federal Traffic Law to improve road safety, curb violations, and enforce stricter penalties. The law includes updated fines, strengthened safety measures, and stronger enforcement to reduce accidents and encourage responsible driving.
Licence suspension for drivers
In certain situations, authorities may refuse, suspend, or cancel license renewals:
A driver’s license may be revoked to protect the public if they are medically unfit or unqualified.
Licences may be suspended if a driver is deemed a risk under security or traffic safety regulations.
Suspended drivers may be reassessed and rehabilitated under executive regulations.
Exemptions from Holding a UAE Driving Licence
Certain individuals can drive without a UAE licence:
Military and police personnel operating official vehicles with valid permits.
Tourists and visitors driving foreign-registered vehicles with a recognized international or foreign license.
Non-residents with valid foreign licenses temporarily staying in the UAE under legal conditions.
Severe penalties for violations
Driving with an unrecognized foreign license will result in a fine of Dh2,000 to Dh10,000.
Repeat offences may lead to at least three months in jail and fines from Dh5,000 to Dh50,000.
Driving with a suspended licence carries a minimum fine of Dh10,000 and up to three months in jail.
Vehicle Inspections and Modifications
Authorities can inspect vehicles anytime. Unfit vehicles must be repaired and pass an official inspection before returning to the road.
Unauthorized modifications like body alterations, engine upgrades, or color changes require prior approval. Repair centers cannot fix accident-damaged vehicles without official authorization.
Requirements for Obtaining a Driving Licence
Applicants must:
Be at least 17 years old.
Pass a medical examination.
Comply with the licensing regulations.
Meet additional requirements set by the authorities.
Fraud and license plate violations
Forgery, tampering or unauthorized use of license plates is punishable by imprisonment and a fine of up to AED 20,000.
Ensuring safe roads
The updated law strengthens road safety by imposing strict penalties, enforcing regulations and ensuring compliance to create a disciplined driving environment in the UAE.
