UAE to Unveil New National Climate Plan Ahead of COP29
Nation Aims to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from 2025 to 2035 Under Paris Agreement Framework

UAE Prepares to Launch Climate Strategy Before COP29 to Cut Emissions
The UAE aims to publish its new national climate plan under the Paris climate agreement, outlining how it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 2025 to 2035 ahead of the COP29 climate summit in November.
It will be among the first significant emitters to do so before the deadline in February 2025.
In an attempt to persuade other countries to submit their plans as well, Sultan Al Jaber declared during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai last year that the oil-producing nation would submit its updated “Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” to the UN.
Why does this matter?
NDCs are the foundation of the Paris Agreement and new emission-reduction targets and should encourage countries to take action to achieve the Paris goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and keeping global temperatures from rising above 1.5C.
The Paris Agreement calls for new and stronger NDCs to be presented every five years.
“We must not see the NDCs as a burden, but as platforms for new growth, green jobs and a clean future,” Jafar told a gathering of leaders of COP28 in Dubai on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. COP in Baku, Azerbaijan and next year in Belem, Brazil.
The new round of NDCs is the first test of the commitment to transition away from fossil fuels agreed at last year’s COP 28. The latest round of country plans by major oil, gas and coal producers did not mention these sectors or cut production, according to the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
The advocacy group Oil Change International said on Thursday that past, present and future COP hosts will increase their combined oil and gas production by 33% by 2035.
