UAE: Three Indian Expats Die After Toxic Gas Exposure in Abu Dhabi
At least three Indian expats died in a sad accident at the City of Lights building on Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), after breathing in toxic gas. On Tuesday, October 22, as the workers were cleaning a building waste tank, the regrettable situation happened.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as Rajkumar, 38, and Ajith Vallikod, 40. Both were from Kerala, an Indian state in the south. A third victim, whose identity has not yet been made public, was from the Indian state of Punjab in the north. The tragedy was exacerbated by the fact that the fatalities were longtime coworkers who had apparently been employed by the same organization for a considerable amount of time.
The events that led up to the accident
Ajith Vallikod was undertaking routine cleaning when he unintentionally slipped into the sewage tank, causing the accident, according to local sources, including one from the Kerala-based publication Mathrubhumi. In a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful endeavor to save him, Rajkumar and the third person also perished in the dangerous conditions within the tank
. The soldiers were soon overpowered by the poisonous gasses in the tank, which resulted in their premature deaths.
Aftermath and Ongoing Procedures
The bodies of the deceased were transported to a private hospital in Abu Dhabi. Authorities are reportedly completing the necessary formalities, which include medical and legal procedures before the repatriation of the bodies to India. Families of the deceased are awaiting the return of their loved ones for funeral rites and cremation in their home states.
The incident raises concerns about safety ethics and highlights the potential dangers of workplace hazards, particularly in businesses involved in waste management.
Local officials have launched an investigation to determine whether the proper safety measures were in place at the time of the incident. It’s likely that the employer’s responsibilities and adherence to safety regulations will also be assessed.
The Indian community in the UAE, especially from Kerala and Punjab, has offered their sympathies and support to the deceased’s family members, many of whom had lived and worked there for years.
