Rising Road Accidents in UAE Highlight Urgent Need for Enhanced Safety Measures

UAE Road Accidents Surge by 46% in 2024 Amid Population Growth

Road accidents in the UAE have increased significantly, up 46% in 2024 from the previous year. There were 6,416 accidents across the country, up from 4,391 in 2023. Rapid population growth and this increase in volume occur simultaneously, which increases traffic congestion and the number of vehicles on the road.

With 3,109 incidents, Dubai recorded the most accidents, followed by Abu Dhabi with 2,199 accidents. Other emirates such as Umm Al Quwain (81), Ajman (122), Fujairah (223), Ras Al Khaimah (231) and Sharjah (451) also recorded significant numbers of accidents. 3,945 incidents were recorded in 2022, an increasing trend that has continued over time, underscoring ongoing safety concerns.

These incidents are still largely caused by human error, with inattention, sudden lane changes and failure to maintain a safe distance being the main causes. According to official figures, 1,092 accidents were caused by sudden deviation, while 1,131 accidents were caused by distraction alone. Ignorance of traffic signals, carelessness and unsafe road entry are other significant concerns. This issue is further exacerbated by the fact that 55% of drivers admitted to using their phones while driving, according to a study conducted by UAE Road Safety and Al Wathba National Insurance.

The number of deaths has also increased despite several road safety initiatives. 384 people died in traffic accidents in 2024, compared to 352 in 2023 and 343 in 2022. The fact that 133 of the deaths were between the ages of 19 and 29 highlights how vulnerable young drivers are.
Furthermore, 149 fatalities occurred among those aged 30 to 44, indicating that working adults are equally vulnerable.

In addition to the fatalities, there were 6,032 injuries in 2024, including 2,303 minor injuries, 3,207 moderate injuries, and 522 serious injuries. The bulk of the victims were men, which is consistent with global patterns showing that male drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in collisions.

A disturbing number of children were also affected by road accidents. 262 children aged 1 to 10 years were involved in accidents, with 13 fatalities and 249 sustaining injuries. Along with children ages two, three, and five, the youngest victims were a one-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy. There were 21 documented deaths among older kids and teens, ages 11 to 18.

Contrary to the notion that poor vision is the main risk factor, the majority of incidents happened in clear weather. According to statistics, human error is the main cause of traffic accidents, which included 728 rollovers, 711 rear-end collisions and 1,974 vehicle collisions.

Traffic safety experts emphasize the urgent need for stronger enforcement of traffic laws and greater driver awareness. Increased police presence, better road safety education and stricter penalties for reckless driving could lead to fewer accidents. To reverse this dangerous trend, it is essential to promote defensive driving techniques and foster a more responsible driving culture.

The increase in collisions is a warning to law enforcement officers, motorists and pedestrians. Tackling reckless driving, ensuring strict enforcement of traffic regulations and fostering a responsible driving culture are essential to improving road safety in the UAE.
