UAE Light Aircraft Crash Claims Lives of 26-Year-Old Indian Doctor and Pilot
A 26-year-old Indian-origin doctor was among two people killed when a light aircraft crashed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The plane, which took off from the Jazira Aviation Club, crashed on the coast of Ras Al Khaimah on December 26.
The crash killed two people, Indian-origin doctor Sulaymaan Al Majid and a 26-year-old Pakistani woman who was also a passenger on the plane.
The doctor, Sulaymaan Al Majid, was a paramedic at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust in England. Born and raised in the UAE, Sulaymaan had chartered the plane for a tourist experience.
His family, including his father, mother and younger brother, were at the aviation club to watch the plane. Sulaymaan’s younger brother was scheduled to be the next to ride, Khaleej Times reported.
The crash occurred shortly after takeoff near the Cove Rotana hotel near the beach. The plane was piloted by a 26-year-old Pakistani woman, who also died in the crash.
Sulaymaan’s father, Majid Mukarram, described the events leading up to and following the crash.
“Initially, we were told that the glider had lost radio contact,” Majid said. “Later, we were informed that it had been emergency landed and the occupants had been taken to hospital.
When we reached the hospital, we were informed that both were seriously injured and were undergoing resuscitation. Sulaiman was dead before we could see him, his time of death was past 4:30pm.
Sulaymaan was also known for his dedication to medical advocacy. He served as co-chair of the British Medical Association’s Northern Resident Doctors Group, where he worked to advance the interests of his colleagues, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The family, who live in Sharjah, are preparing for Sulaymaan’s funeral at Al Qusai Cemetery.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed the crash on Sunday. Task forces and relevant authorities are continuing to try to determine the cause of the crash.
