UAE Pavilion at COP29: Uniting for Accelerated Climate Action

Abu Dhabi, November 7: With COP29 set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, next week, the UAE is gearing up to showcase its climate leadership at the conference. Abdulla Al Balalaa, the UAE’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainable Affairs, unveiled the UAE’s extensive plans for the event, including a national pavilion in the Blue Zone. The pavilion will host over 60 thought-leadership dialogues and sessions throughout the two-week event, where climate experts, government officials, private sector leaders, academics, and youth will engage in discussions to co-create solutions to the world’s most pressing climate challenges.

Al Balalaa emphasized the significance of COP29 as a key moment in the global climate journey, marking a year since the UAE Consensus achieved a global agreement to keep the 1.5°C temperature rise goal within reach. He pointed out that COP29 will occur just three months before countries submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining their climate transition plans. “The UAE remains committed to accelerating the global energy transition, engaging in collaborative negotiations to raise ambition and continue our progress toward a resilient and sustainable future,” Al Balalaa said.

The UAE Pavilion at COP29 will focus on several high-priority areas, including:

  • Climate Finance for the Global South: Demonstrating the UAE’s role in advancing renewable energy solutions and mobilizing resources to support developing nations in tackling climate change.
  • Decarbonization of Hard-to-Abate Sectors: Addressing challenges in high-emission industries and showcasing innovations aimed at achieving deep emissions reductions.
  • Leveraging AI for Food and Water Systems: Exploring the use of artificial intelligence to address critical issues related to food security and water scarcity in climate-vulnerable regions.
  • Global Partnerships: Emphasizing initiatives like AIM4Climate and the Mangrove Breakthrough, as well as collaborations between the UAE and nations in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
  • Youth Empowerment: The United Arab Emirates is committed to empowering the upcoming generation of leaders by ensuring their active participation in international climate negotiations and involving them in inclusive climate policymaking.

With an emphasis on water management in climate change adaptation, the UAE is also spearheading the preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference, which it and Senegal will co-chair. The program will also include urban planning projects like circular cities and raising money to restore biodiversity.

The UAE’s Pavilion will present its significant achievements, including the impact of COP28, the UAE’s Net Zero commitment, and its progress in biodiversity conservation, climate finance, food and water security, and safeguarding livelihoods in a changing climate.

Program Details: The UAE Pavilion will be located in the Blue Zone at COP29, with dynamic programming taking place from November 12 to November 21, 2024. The full schedule is available on the UAE’s official climate website, www.uaeclimate.com. The pavilion will serve as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and advancing collective action to address the climate crisis, with a focus on “Accelerating Action Together.”

Through this engagement, the UAE is reinforcing its commitment to global climate goals and offering actionable solutions to drive a sustainable future, while fostering international cooperation to meet the challenges posed by climate change.
