Emirates Expat Community Grows with Visa Changes, Civil Law Reforms

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) stands as a beacon for over 9.06 million expatriates hailing from 200 countries, offering unparalleled living standards. The expat community is witnessing a surge in the Emirates, a phenomenon credited to transformative residence visa modifications and progressive civil law reforms.
Residency Options in the UAE:
1. Green Visa for Work:
- Definition: The Green Visa, a distinctive residency permit, empowers holders to self-sponsor for a remarkable five years, obviating the requirement for a UAE national or employer sponsorship.
- Eligible Applicants: Open to freelancers, self-employed individuals, and skilled employees, including but not limited to:
- Freelancers and/or self-employed people, necessitating a freelance/self-employment permit, proof of a bachelor’s degree or specialized diploma, and evidence of an annual income from self-employment.
- Skilled employees, requiring a valid employment contract, classification in the first, second, or third occupational level by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, a minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and a monthly salary of not less than Dh15,000.
- Renewal: The Green Visa is renewable for the same term upon expiry.
2. Standard Work Visa:
- Validity: Typically a two-year employment visa for expatriates engaged in the private sector, government sector, or free zones.
- Application: The employer is mandated to apply for the standard residence visa on behalf of the employee.
3. Golden Visa:
- Characteristics: A long-term residence visa delivering exclusive privileges, including an entry visa for six months, renewable residence permits for 5 or 10 years, and the freedom from requiring a sponsor.
- Additional Benefits: Golden Visa holders can stay outside the UAE for more than the usual six-month period, sponsor family members without age restrictions, and sponsor an unlimited number of domestic helpers.
- Requirements: To obtain a work permit, applicants must fulfill criteria such as a clear colored photo, a valid passport and residency (Golden) Visa, an approved employment contract, and academic certificates based on skill levels.
4. Domestic Worker Visa:
- Regulations: Specific visa regulations aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of domestic workers. Typically sponsored by their employers, with key points including:
- The expatriate sponsor must earn a minimum salary of at least Dh25,000.
- The domestic worker should not be related to the sponsoring individual.
- The sponsor must be an existing UAE resident living with their family.
- For domestic workers serving as private drivers, the sponsor must own two personal cars registered under their name in the UAE.
This diverse array of residency options underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering a thriving and inclusive expatriate community. These tailored solutions accommodate professionals with varied backgrounds, skills, and preferences, reinforcing the UAE’s status as a global hub for talent and innovation.
