UAE and Lebanon Deepen Ties with New Agreements on Cooperation and Development

Leaders highlight commitment to stronger relations, economic collaboration, and improved travel access

Abu Dhabi: On Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s first official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their diplomatic and economic ties. Following high-level discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the two countries pledged to increase cooperation in a number of areas, including public services, investment and governance, in a joint statement.

President Mohammed bin Zayed reiterated at the meeting the UAE’s strong support for Lebanon’s development, stability and sovereignty. In addition to expressing his appreciation for the UAE’s ongoing humanitarian and developmental support, President Aoun welcomed the possibility of new collaborations aimed at reviving Lebanon’s institutions and economy.

One of the key outcomes of the discussions was a mutual agreement to boost bilateral economic and investment collaboration. A UAE-Lebanon Business Group has been jointly established, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development will soon travel to Lebanon to assess new projects. In addition, the UAE’s Government Experience Exchange Office will travel to Beirut to provide its expertise on institutional reform and governance, demonstrating mutual interest in improving public sector performance in both countries.

Travel between the UAE and Lebanon will also be easier. After years of tense relations, the two sides decided to improve diplomatic relations and streamline processes. Notably, the UAE lifted travel restrictions that had been in place since 2021 in response to tensions over regional political issues. This change, in particular, marks a strengthening of relations and a step towards full normalization, since the UAE reopened its embassy in Beirut earlier this year.

The UAE’s move comes after Gulf region efforts to restore ties with Lebanon, including a pledge of $150 million in aid from Gulf countries in 2024, $100 million of which comes from the UAE alone. Despite previous political tensions, these events point to a regional shift toward reestablishing ties with Lebanon.
