Emirates launch TradeTech Accelerator to nurture startups and modernize global trade

UAE Unveils TradeTech Accelerator to Boost AI-Driven Trade Innovation

Dubai [United Arab Emirates], October 18: Thani Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, has officially launched the TradeTech Accelerator, an innovative incubator aimed at nurturing startups that develop advanced technology solutions for trade.

The UAE’s larger TradeTech Initiative, which was launched in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and the World Economic Forum (WEF), includes the TradeTech Accelerator as a key component. Through the modernization of trade finance, logistics, customs processes, and cross-border payments, this program seeks to promote innovation in trade.

Al Zeyoudi inaugurated the Accelerator during WEF’s Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils 2024, held from October 15-17 in Dubai. The event convened 500+ participants from the public and private sectors, academia, and civil society, representing over 80 countries, to envision a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.

To enhance the effectiveness of the Accelerator, Plug & Play, a globally renowned innovation platform with expertise in startup development, has partnered with the initiative. Plug & Play will provide participants with mentorship, collaborative opportunities, and strategic guidance, ensuring the startups are scalable and market-ready.

The Accelerator is now open for applications from companies working on AI-driven trade solutions, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) being the core theme for the initiative’s second year. The first cohort of participants is expected to graduate by March 2025, marking a significant milestone for the UAE’s ambitions to revolutionize global trade systems.

The UAE’s Trade Innovation Vision
Al Zeyoudi underlined that the TradeTech Initiative, which promotes cutting-edge technology to build a more resilient, effective, and accessible trading ecosystem, underlines the UAE’s leadership in international commerce. He said that by acting as a link between creative ideas and important figures in trade and logistics, the Accelerator will help businesses overcome obstacles at every stage of the value chain, from trade finance to customs clearance.

The project is in line with Abu Dhabi’s strategic goal on innovation and startup development, according to ADDED Chairman Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi. He emphasized the functions of Hub71 and the Advanced Trade & Logistics Platform (ATLP), highlighting the emirate’s dedication to enhancing its standing as a global trade hub and streamlining trade processes with AI-powered technology.

A Collaborative Effort for a Future-Ready Trade Ecosystem
Tim Stekkinger, Head of the TradeTech Global Initiative at WEF, stressed that startups are pivotal in breaking down trade barriers through innovative technologies. Saeed Amidi, CEO of Plug & Play, further noted that the partnership with the UAE will create more secure and sustainable global trade practices by helping startups unlock the potential of advanced technologies.

Since launching the Global TradeTech Initiative at Davos in 2023, the UAE has maintained a leading role in digitally transforming trade ecosystems. Following key milestones such as the first TradeTech Forum and the publication of the TradeTech Report earlier in 2024, the UAE continues to push forward its vision for a future-ready trading system.

The Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils 2024 reflects the UAE’s ambition to shape the future of trade, bringing together thought leaders to explore new opportunities across technology, AI, climate, governance, economy, and society.
