UAE Honors Indian-Origin Doctor with Street Naming in Abu Dhabi

Recognizing a Pioneer in UAE Healthcare

The UAE has recently bestowed a significant honor upon Dr. George Matthew, an Indian-origin doctor who has played a pivotal role in advancing the country’s healthcare sector. A road in Abu Dhabi near Sheikh Shakbooth Medical City in Al Mafraq now bears his name, marking his 57 years of dedicated service to the UAE’s medical community. This recognition is part of the “Honoring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets” initiative led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT).

Dr. George Matthew first arrived in the UAE in 1967 at the age of 26, intending initially to move to the United States. However, inspired by a missionary friend’s glowing description of Al Ain, he decided to stay. His application to become Al Ain’s first government doctor was successful, and under Sheikh Zayed’s patronage, he opened the region’s first clinic.

Affectionately known as “Matyous” by locals, Dr. George Matthew started his career as a general practitioner and significantly contributed to the development of modern medicine in the UAE. Over the years, he held various key positions, including Medical Director of the Al Ain Region in 1972 and Health Authority Consultant in 2001. His leadership was instrumental in advancing healthcare services and promoting modern medical practices throughout the country.

Reflecting on his early days in the UAE, Dr. Matthew remarked, “When I first arrived, the infrastructure was still evolving. Inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, I dedicated myself to serving the people.” He expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him, acknowledging the support and encouragement he received from the community.

Dr. George Matthew’s contributions extend beyond clinical practice. He pursued specialized studies in tropical diseases in England and hospital management at Harvard University. As an educator, he trained numerous healthcare professionals, earning the respect and trust of colleagues and patients alike.

His dedication also earned him the privilege of serving the royal family, including the late Sheikh Tahnoon bin Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. In recognition of his decades-long service, the UAE granted Dr. Matthew and his family citizenship a decade ago, further solidifying his bond with the nation.

Originally hailing from Thumpamon, Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India, Dr. George Matthew graduated from Trivandrum Medical College in 1963. He continues to contribute actively to the Private Health sector, collaborating with colleagues like Dr. Abdul Rahim Jaafar.

Dr. Matthew expressed profound gratitude for his enduring relationship with the UAE, stating, “It was a great privilege to serve under His Highness for 57 years. This recognition is a testament to that enduring bond.”

The naming of George Matthew Street in Abu Dhabi not only commemorates his remarkable career but also underscores the UAE’s commitment to honoring those who have made significant contributions to its healthcare and societal development.
