UAE extradites Albanian to Belgium for murder trial
Gergely Franc handed to authorities for trial

In a significant legal development, the UAE has extradited Gergely Franc, an Albanian citizen, to Belgium, where he is set to face trial for premeditated murder. The extradition process was completed on Friday, with the approval of the Ministry of Justice, as reported by the state news agency Wam.
The details of the murder charge were not disclosed in the announcement, maintaining the confidentiality of the ongoing legal proceedings. The extradition underscores the commitment of the UAE to cooperate on legal and judicial matters with other countries, aligning with international best practices.
The extradition agreement between the UAE and Belgium was signed in December 2021 and came into effect in November of the following year. This agreement is part of a broader framework, with the UAE having more than 40 such extradition agreements with various countries.
According to Wam, these agreements exemplify the UAE’s commitment to fostering collaboration and cooperation in legal matters globally. The extradition of individuals accused of serious crimes reflects the country’s dedication to upholding the principles of justice and international law.
This extradition comes on the heels of another high-profile case, where the UAE extradited British hedge fund trader Sanjay Shah to Denmark. Mr. Shah is facing allegations of orchestrating a $1.7 billion tax fraud scheme. Residing in Dubai on The Palm Jumeirah, Shah has vehemently denied the charges, asserting that he operated within the bounds of Danish law.
The extradition of individuals involved in serious legal matters demonstrates the UAE’s adherence to international legal standards and its commitment to addressing transnational criminal activities. As the legal landscape evolves, these extraditions contribute to strengthening global cooperation in the pursuit of justice.
