UAE explores new horizons through the power of social media

Dubai's 1 Billion Followers Summit: UAE leads in digital influence

Social media has revolutionized careers in the UAE, with Indian housewives becoming chefs and travel enthusiasts, while Emirati vloggers explore tech, travel, gaming, and everyday domestic affairs. This shift has led to a generation finding unprecedented success and income in unconventional fields.

Recognizing the influence wielded by content creators and their dedicated followers, Dubai hosted the second edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit at the Emirates Towers and the Museum of the Future on January 10-11. This summit, touted as the world’s largest expo for content creators, brought together over 100 speakers, 300-plus companies, 200 CEOs, and more than 3000 content creators, followed by 1.6 billion people. Representatives from major social media platforms also attended.

Organized by Dubai’s New Media Academy, the two-day paid summit aimed to provide learning opportunities through inspirational talks, workshops, and panel discussions by renowned content creators. It offered a platform to connect with industry leaders, fellow creators, and innovators, facilitating potential collaborations or business partnerships. Topics ranged from finding one’s niche on platforms like YouTube to venturing into the digital realm late in life and transforming views into substantial earnings.

The summit reinforced Dubai’s claim as an ideal place for content creators. The UAE’s Golden Visa scheme, offering exclusive benefits to investors and professionals, is expected to attract more talent with its sunny climate, low taxes, and a secure environment.

Yusuf Omar, a mobile journalism exponent, emphasized in an interview that the UAE recognizes the value of influencers, making it a global leader in supporting Arabic-speaking talent. He commended the 1 Billion Summit as evidence of the country’s efforts to incubate the next generation of influencers.

Influencers like the Ruler of Dubai and the Crown Prince play a significant role in the digital realm, with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum being the most followed royal globally. Emirati influencer Khalid al Ameri and Indian vlogger Sindhu Biju were highlighted as successful content creators contributing positively to their communities.

Dubai’s status as the social media capital of the world was affirmed by Proxyrack, citing an almost perfect score for internet usage. However, it’s essential for influencers to adhere to the UAE’s regulations, overseen by the National Media Council, ensuring content aligns with cultural values. Incomes from influencer activities are subject to 5% VAT, and proper licensing is required, with penalties for non-compliance.

From a dusty port town in 1971 to a vibrant city and influencer culture hub, Dubai has undergone a remarkable transformation. Its appeal as an Instagram-worthy city and a haven for influencers is strengthened by events like the 1 Billion Followers Summit, emphasizing the emirate’s commitment to staying ahead in the digital race.
