UAE expanded Seawater desalination plant in Rafah
Expansion project increases clean water production by 4.5 million liters/day

The UAE has significantly enhanced its desalination capacity on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border with Gaza, inaugurating expanded plants that will provide 4.5 million liters of clean drinking water daily to Gazans. This initiative, unveiled by Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, Minister of State, aims to address water scarcity issues in the region. The desalination plants draw water from the Mediterranean Sea using a network of pipes, and after filtration, transport it underground across the border to Gaza.
Mohammad Al Rashidi, the project manager, emphasized the significance of the increased capacity, allowing the use of seawater for various purposes, including drinking. The expansion involved adding six new containers to the existing six, doubling the total capacity from 2.25 million to 4.5 million liters. The new containers, along with additional infrastructure, are expected to make 1.2 million gallons of water available to Gaza residents.
The desalination project is part of the UAE’s Gallant Knight 3 humanitarian operation, aligned with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s commitment to supporting Gaza during the ongoing conflict. As part of these efforts, the UAE has opened a warehouse in Al Arish, near Rafah, stockpiling essential aid items such as nappies, blankets, canned foods, and electric heaters. However, the delivery of these supplies into Gaza is contingent on border authorities’ permissions.
The UAE’s humanitarian aid to Gaza has been substantial, with over 9,296 tonnes delivered through 121 lorries and 129 cargo planes. The aid aims to alleviate the distress caused by the conflict, which has seen widespread casualties, displacement, and damage. As the UAE continues its efforts to provide relief and support, these initiatives underscore the commitment to addressing urgent needs and contributing to humanitarian causes in the region.
