UAE Denies $10k Bank Balance and N640k Fee for Visa Applications
Clarification Amid Controversy Over Visa Requirements

UAE Denies Requiring $10k Bank Balance and N640k Fee for Visa Applications
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) clarified that Nigeria has not been exempted from the customary visa application process, amid recent confusion and controversy over purported new visa requirements.
Initial Excitement Followed by Disappointment
On Monday, Nigerians celebrated the news that the UAE had lifted the three-year travel ban. Many Nigerians were eager to visit the UAE for tourism, business, and family visits. However, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, quickly dampened the excitement by stating that the resolution included conditions that were “mutually beneficial.” One of these conditions was the requirement to obtain a Document Verification Number (DVN).
Understanding the DVN
The DV hub explained that the DVN process is a specialized service designed to authenticate and verify documentation essential for UAE visa applications. Applicants must pay a non-refundable fee of N640,000, excluding VAT. Additionally, Nigerians must provide proof of a six-month bank statement with a minimum balance of $10,000. Many Nigerians felt that these requirements amounted to an upheld ‘constructive ban’ and raised doubts about the DVN’s authenticity.
UAE Denies Knowledge of ‘Conditions’
TheCable, a prominent news outlet, contacted the UAE’s Department of Economy and Tourism to confirm if obtaining a DVN was part of the resolutions reached. The department clarified that the DV hub website is not affiliated with the UAE government. When TheCable asked if Nigerians must pay for document verification, they were referred to Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFAD).
Official Process for UAE Visa Application
The GDRFAD outlined the official visa application process, which requires applicants to submit a personal photo and a copy of a passport with at least six months’ validity. The cost of a tourist visa ranges from 200-300 dirhams (N60,000 – N90,000), depending on the duration of stay. Additional requirements include a travel ticket and valid medical insurance within the UAE. Regarding the alleged $10,000 bank balance requirement, the GDRFAD stated, “We are not aware of such requirements. Apply for your visa through the GDRFAD.”
Challenges and Reactions
Many Nigerians reacted with surprise and frustration to the initial announcement of the DVN and bank balance requirements. Some viewed these measures as a tactic to indirectly maintain travel restrictions, labeling it a ‘constructive ban.’ Social media platforms were flooded with reactions, ranging from skepticism to outrage. Many questioned the legitimacy of the DV hub and the necessity of the high fees.
Seeking Further Clarification
Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assured TheCable that the ministry’s office in the Middle East would seek further clarification on the DVN. This effort aims to dispel any lingering doubts and provide accurate information to Nigerians regarding the visa application process.
Importance of Accurate Information
The recent confusion over visa requirements underscores the importance of clear communication and official confirmation of policies. The UAE’s denial of the $10,000 bank balance and N640,000 fee requirements provides reassurance to Nigerians and simplifies the visa application process. However, it highlights the need for applicants to verify information through official channels to avoid misinformation and unnecessary stress.
International travel regulations are dynamic, requiring ongoing dialogue and cooperation between nations to ensure transparent and accessible procedures. As the Nigerian government seeks clarity, it is essential for applicants to adhere to verified guidelines for a smooth visa application process. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by international travelers and the crucial role of official communication in preventing misunderstandings. Collaboration between the UAE and Nigeria is essential to facilitate travel and foster a robust bilateral relationship. As investigations into the DVN and related requirements continue, Nigerians can rely on their government’s commitment to providing accurate information and supporting their travel needs.
