UAE’s Commitment to Eradicating Human Trafficking Highlighted by Minister of Justice
World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
On July 30, Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, the UAE Minister of Justice, underscored the significance of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Observed annually on this date since its establishment by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, this day is dedicated to raising global awareness and promoting coordinated international and regional efforts to combat human trafficking and bring its perpetrators to justice. The day serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing struggle against this serious crime and the need for continued vigilance and action.
UAE’s Commitment Under Leadership
Minister Al Nuaimi highlighted that under the visionary leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates is resolutely committed to addressing and eradicating human trafficking. He described human trafficking as one of the most dangerous and inhumane crimes facing the international community today. The UAE’s dedication to tackling this issue is reflected in its comprehensive approach, which includes legislative reforms, enhanced victim protection measures, and strategic international cooperation.
National Committee’s Actions and New Law
Al Nuaimi elaborated on the proactive measures taken by the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking. The Committee has been actively working to assess and adapt policies and legislative frameworks in response to the evolving nature of human trafficking. This ongoing review process has helped establish a clear and dynamic roadmap to strengthen the national system’s ability to combat trafficking and address its various forms and developments.
In 2023, the Committee’s efforts resulted in the enactment of a new law designed to enhance the fight against human trafficking. This legislation introduced several key measures, including the establishment of new services aimed at protecting victims and the imposition of stringent penalties on traffickers. The law addresses specific acts of exploitation, such as the confiscation or destruction of victims’ identification papers and passports. It also mandates severe penalties for traffickers, particularly in cases involving child victims, thereby reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable individuals.
New Electronic System for Victim Protection
In line with the directives to integrate advanced digital technology and streamline bureaucratic processes, the Ministry of Justice is preparing to launch a new electronic system for the referral and protection of human trafficking victims. This innovative system is designed to facilitate the swift and effective protection of victims, ensuring that their rights and dignity are preserved. By leveraging modern technology, the UAE aims to enhance its capacity to respond to trafficking cases promptly and efficiently.
International Cooperation and Solidarity
Minister Al Nuaimi emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation and solidarity to effectively combat human trafficking. He noted that addressing this transnational crime requires a collaborative approach involving countries and relevant organizations at both regional and global levels. Such cooperation is crucial for reducing the impact of human trafficking and ensuring that comprehensive and effective measures are in place to support victims and prosecute traffickers.
The United Arab Emirates’ commitment to eradicating human trafficking is demonstrated through its legislative advancements, victim protection measures, and strategic use of technology. By promoting awareness, enhancing legal frameworks, and fostering international collaboration, the UAE aims to address the complex and evolving challenges of human trafficking. This comprehensive approach reflects the UAE’s dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and ensuring justice for victims of this grave crime.
