TDRA allocates 600 MHz and 6 GHz bands for International Mobile Telecommunication
Pioneering the future of smart cities and 6G technology, the UAE sets a benchmark in telecommunications excellence
UAE Leads Global Telecom Innovation with 600 MHz and 6 GHz Frequency Allocation
The UAE’s technological vision is further demonstrated by its choice to reserve 600 MHz and 6 GHz spectrum for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) networks. The initiative was launched by the Telecommunications and Digital Governance Regulatory Authority (TDRA) as part of the fourth update of the National Frequency Plan, making the UAE one of the first countries in the world to do so.
The announcement expands on the conclusions of the 2023 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23), which took place in Dubai and brought together international stakeholders to talk about communication tactics for the future. Operating from 2025 to 2026, these newly allotted frequencies will transform smart city infrastructure by incorporating advances from the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). Along with enhancing 5G capabilities with data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps within the 6 GHz band, the project also prepares the way for 6G services, which are anticipated by 2030.
A Milestone of National Progress
H.E. Talal Belhoul Al Falasi, Chairman of TDRA’s Board of Directors, celebrated this accomplishment:
“This achievement aligns with the joy of our 53rd National Day and embodies the We the UAE 2031 vision, emphasizing continuous progress. It reflects the spirit of leadership and innovation that has defined our nation’s journey. Guided by our visionary leadership, this initiative ensures our nation’s excellence in communication technologies, a key driver of growth across all sectors. It underscores the UAE’s proactive and forward-thinking approach to modernization and global leadership.”
Innovative Technology for the Future
H.E. Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, TDRA’s Director-General, highlighted the transformative nature of this step:
“Our leadership has taught us to not only prepare for the future but to actively shape it. By allocating these frequency bands, we lay the foundation for groundbreaking technologies that will revolutionize communication.
6G technology promises AI-enhanced networks, blazing-fast speeds and sub-millisecond latency. Innovations such as augmented and virtual reality, holographic communication and extensive IoT integration will be possible with these capabilities. By taking this step, the UAE is certain to continue to lead the global digital transformation.
Building a Knowledge-Based Economy
According to this development, the UAE aims to establish a knowledge-driven economy built on technological innovation. When these frequency bands are distributed, the nation’s status as a key global center for information and communication technology (ICT) is improved, and its digitalization is accelerated.
