India, France and UAE in Mega Air Exercise over Arabian Sea
Desert Knight exercise highlights top aircraft from India, France, UAE

India, France, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) engaged in a significant joint air exercise named ‘Desert Knight’ over the Arabian Sea, addressing global apprehensions about Houthi militants targeting commercial vessels in the region. The exercise, held on Tuesday, showcased frontline aerial assets and combat jets from the air forces of the three nations.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) contributed Su-30 MKI, MiG-29, and Jaguar fighter jets, alongside AWACS (airborne early warning and control aircraft), C-130-J transport planes, and air-to-air refueling aircraft. The primary focus of the exercise was to enhance synergy and interoperability among the three air forces, according to the Indian Air Force.
Taking place in the Indian Flight Information Regions (FIRs), the IAF aircraft operated from multiple bases in India. The exercise assumed significance against the backdrop of escalating attacks on commercial vessels by Houthi militants in the Red Sea.
The IAF stated, “On January 23, the Indian Air Force conducted exercise Desert Knight along with French Air and Space Force (FASF) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force.” The French participation included Rafale fighter aircraft and a multi-role tanker transport, while the UAE Air Force deployed the F-16. Both operated from the Al Dhafra air base in the UAE.
The interactions during the exercise facilitated the exchange of operational knowledge, experiences, and best practices among the participating nations. The IAF emphasized that such exercises demonstrate the growing diplomatic and military interactions in the region while showcasing the prowess of the IAF.
This trilateral exercise preceded India’s Republic Day celebrations, where two Rafale fighter jets and an Airbus A330 multi-role tanker transport aircraft from the French air force are scheduled to feature. Additionally, a 95-member marching contingent and a 33-member band contingent from France will participate in the parade. French President Emmanuel Macron will be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, making him the sixth French leader to grace this prestigious annual event.
