To address soaring energy consumption during the scorching summer months, the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has launched a proactive campaign advocating energy rationalization as a fundamental lifestyle choice. Central to this effort is the “Conservation Hour” or “Peak Hour” initiative, scheduled from July to September. This program aims to reduce energy usage during peak hours by encouraging residents across Sharjah to power down non-essential electrical appliances daily from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

The initiative responds to the urgent need to alleviate strain on the power grid, particularly as temperatures in the UAE surpass 50°C. These extreme conditions, coupled with humidity levels reaching 90 percent, pose significant challenges to maintaining a stable and efficient electricity supply. By promoting mindful energy consumption practices, SEWA aims not only to enhance grid reliability but also to underscore the importance of sustainable living practices among residents.

SEWA’s Conservation Hour initiative is part of its broader commitment to promoting energy conservation and environmental stewardship. Over the years, SEWA has implemented various programs aimed at raising awareness about responsible energy use and reducing the carbon footprint. By empowering residents to actively participate in energy-saving measures, SEWA seeks to foster a community-wide culture of sustainability.

SEWA’s efforts are aligned with global initiatives aimed at mitigating energy consumption during peak demand periods, contributing to overall environmental resilience and resource conservation. Concurrently, the Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation PJSC (Empower), a leading district cooling services provider globally, has launched its annual summer campaign titled ‘Set at 24°C and Save’. This initiative encourages customers to set their air conditioning units to a default temperature of 24°C, aiming to reduce both electricity costs and energy consumption. Empower’s campaign complements SEWA’s efforts by providing practical solutions for individuals and businesses to contribute to energy efficiency goals while maintaining comfort levels.

Together, SEWA and Empower exemplify a concerted approach to addressing energy challenges posed by extreme weather conditions in the UAE. By implementing targeted initiatives and fostering community engagement, these organizations play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development goals and enhancing resilience against climate variability. Through education, advocacy, and practical measures, SEWA and Empower empower residents and businesses alike to make informed choices that contribute to a more sustainable future for Sharjah and beyond.
