The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to introduce an innovative digital identity system to replace the physical Emirates ID. This revolutionary advancement will make it easier and more secure for residents and visitors to access services they need across a range of sectors.

Using cutting-edge facial recognition and biometric authentication technology, the digital identity system is expected to be launched by next year. By integrating these advancements, the system seeks to improve the efficiency and usability of identity verification across key industries such as government services, banking, healthcare, hospitality and telecommunications.

The announcement was made at the recent Federal National Council (FNC) meeting, when FNC Member Dr. Adnan Hamad Al Hammadi stressed the continued use of the physical Emirates ID despite the UAE’s significant advances in digitalization. He noted that while the country has made significant strides in providing intelligent services aimed at reducing red tape, a physical Emirates ID is still required to conduct transactions for many services, including banks, hotels and hospitals. He maintained that the full potential of digital services was hampered by this reliance on conventional IDs.

In response, Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, and Minister of State for FNC Affairs, addressed Dr. Al Hammadi’s concerns by presenting a written response from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Al Owais reiterated the UAE’s continued efforts to improve digital service delivery and reduce red tape. He assured that while some industries still require physical identification, the UAE is making great progress in fully digitizing its services.

The ICP, which has already integrated digital ID services into several government platforms, announced its intentions to implement a unified biometric system that includes artificial intelligence (AI)-powered facial recognition technology. Thanks to this technology, residents and guests will be able to confirm their identities securely and easily without the need for physical identification, which will be available through an official smart app.

The government authority stressed that the transition to a biometric system is supported by strong data security measures and a risk-managed architecture, which ensures a high level of security for users. The rollout of the new system is being carefully coordinated with stakeholders from the public and commercial sectors to ensure its seamless integration and broad adoption.

The UAE’s new digital identity infrastructure is expected to increase service efficiency, improve customer experience in general, and further position the country as a world leader in smart government. The first wave of the system’s implementation will focus on sectors most impacted by the current reliance on physical ID cards, such as healthcare, finance, and hospitality.

In the UAE’s ongoing attempts to push the limits of digital innovation, this initiative represents yet another significant milestone. With the launch of over 100 e-services in a variety of industries, the UAE is currently ranked first in the Arab world and thirteenth globally in terms of digital government development.
