Terrorism plot trial in Abu Dhabi court adjourned

Eighty-four defendants are accused of setting up a terrorist organization in the UAE

An Abu Dhabi court has delayed the trial of 84 individuals accused of orchestrating a terrorist organization aimed at plotting an attack within the UAE. These suspects purportedly played key roles in an entity known as the “Justice and Dignity Committee,” which allegedly aimed to incite public dissent through protests and clashes with security forces.

The defendants, a majority of whom authorities claim are linked to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, are being tried at the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal, also recognized as the State Security Court. Following several hearings since February, the latest session took place last Thursday.

During the recent court session, the defense presented arguments contesting evidence presented by the prosecution. They criticized technical and financial reports, asserting that they relied heavily on analysis and left room for doubt regarding their clients’ involvement in the alleged terrorist plot.

Legal representatives for the accused argued for their clients’ acquittal, stating that their lack of knowledge about the organization’s true intentions negated any criminal intent. Previously, allegations of money laundering were leveled against five defendants and six companies allegedly used to fund the group.

The charges against the defendants directly relate to the establishment of another clandestine organization with the intent to carry out acts of violence and terrorism on UAE soil. The defendants are accused of attempting to conceal the crime and related evidence before their apprehension and subsequent charges.

The trial has been adjourned until April 18 to allow for the completion of defense pleas.
