UAE to Open 6,000 Midday Rest Stations for Delivery Workers
MoHRE Collaborates with Government and Private Sectors to Enhance Safety and Welfare for Delivery Workers Amid Summer Heat

UAE to Open 6,000 Rest Stations for Delivery Workers During Midday Break
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced a significant initiative to enhance the welfare of delivery service workers across the UAE. In a collaborative effort with various government entities and private sector companies, MoHRE will establish 6,000 rest stations for delivery workers to use during the Midday Break. This break period, which is designed to protect workers from the extreme summer heat, spans from 15th June to 15th September 2024.
An interactive map will be made available to these workers, enabling them to easily locate and access the rest stations. This user-friendly map aims to ensure that workers can find nearby rest areas quickly, promoting their safety and well-being during the hottest part of the day.
The initiative is a testament to the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the health and safety of delivery workers. By providing a safe working environment, the Ministry aims to address the unique challenges faced by this sector. Delivery workers often do not stay in one place while the Midday Break is enforced and must manage the timely delivery of certain materials that require prompt transportation.
This comprehensive initiative is a collaborative effort that includes notable partners such as Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Integrated Transport Centre in Abu Dhabi, and the departments of economic development across the UAE. Major delivery companies, including Talabat, Deliveroo, Noon, and Careem, are also involved. Additionally, numerous restaurants, shopping centres, retail stores, and cloud kitchens have committed to providing rest areas for delivery service drivers, reflecting widespread support from various sectors.
In a press statement, the Ministry emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Delivery services are a key logistical sector, unique in nature, given that its workers do not stay in one place while the Midday Break is enforced, and due to the nature of certain materials being transported that need to be delivered on time,” the statement read. This highlights the critical role delivery workers play in the logistics chain and the necessity of safeguarding their health.
This initiative builds on the success of last year’s program, which saw the establishment of 365 rest stations for delivery workers. These stations were particularly beneficial during the Midday Break, which runs from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The positive feedback and outcomes from last year’s efforts have motivated the Ministry to expand the program significantly.
Under the Midday Break regulations, employers are required to provide several protective measures for their workers. These include parasols and shaded areas to shield workers from direct sunlight, adequate cooling devices to mitigate heat exposure, and sufficient supplies of cold drinking water. Employers must also provide hydrating materials, such as salts, and other necessary amenities and first aid equipment at job sites. These measures are crucial in preventing heat-related illnesses and ensuring the well-being of workers.
The MoHRE has also put in place mechanisms to monitor compliance with the Midday Break regulations. Reports of any violations can be made through various channels, including the Ministry’s call centre at 600590000, its smart application, and its website. This multi-faceted approach ensures that workers can report issues conveniently and that prompt action can be taken to address any violations.
Overall, the establishment of 6,000 rest stations for delivery workers is a proactive and comprehensive measure that underscores the UAE’s commitment to worker welfare and safety. Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, the Ministry aims to create a safer and healthier working environment for all delivery service workers during the challenging summer months.
