Saudi Arabia poised to lead global AI regulation, says expert

Ian Khan says Saudi Arabia's AI standards and predicts job transformation, not loss, in its industries

LONDON: Saudi Arabia is positioned as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, paving the way for discussions and consensus-building on the operation of such rules, according to technology futurist Ian Khan. The Kingdom’s active role in setting AI standards, particularly through the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence, places it in a strategic position to shape the global framework for AI regulations.

Khan emphasized the importance of such regulations given the widespread implementation of AI in everyday life. He also commended Saudi Arabia’s growth in the sector and predicted a regulatory framework for AI in the country within one or two years.

In 2020, Khan foresaw AI’s increasing dominance in Saudi Arabia’s job market, with authorities envisioning the nation as a global AI leader. He highlighted that AI integration in projects like NEOM and The Line, along with initiatives in electric vehicles, signals a need for robust regulations and safeguards.

Khan suggested that collaborative efforts from the Middle East, possibly led by Saudi Arabia or the UAE, could drive global AI regulations.

Despite the US having research and knowledge in AI, Khan expressed concern about its lag in implementation and predicted regulatory challenges. In contrast, he sees Saudi Arabia’s commitment to AI reflected in projects like developing electric vehicles, building EV charging stations, and establishing off-grid charging networks.

The convergence of technology growth and sustainable initiatives in Saudi Arabia, including investments in innovative technologies, positions the country as a significant player on the global stage.

Khan praised Saudi Arabia’s multifaceted approach, emphasizing its aspirations to be a financial hub, address climate change, lead in oil and gas, and contribute to cultural and political negotiations. He commended the Future Investment Initiative for its global impact and foresaw a regulatory framework for AI in Saudi Arabia within one or two years.

Looking to 2030, Khan envisioned a job market driven by AI, emphasizing the demand for AI skills, including data scientists and professionals capable of working with AI in various sectors.

He anticipates accelerated development in AI applications across healthcare, child development, education, tourism, climate change, food industry, transportation, and manufacturing. Khan believes that by 2040, AI regulation will be mastered globally, with frameworks and policies in place, ensuring the protection of individuals and standardized rules.

The future, according to Khan, holds an AI-driven era, with integrated and intuitive services significantly enhancing the quality of life for people worldwide.
