Saudi Arabia Announces Discovery of New Oil and Gas Fields
Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announces new oil and gas fields in Eastern Province and Empty Quarter

Saudi Arabia Announces Major Discovery of Multiple Oil and Gas Fields
Saudi Arabia: On Monday, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia, made a significant announcement regarding the discovery of multiple oil and gas fields in the country’s Eastern Province and the Empty Quarter. This announcement, reported by the official Saudi news agency, marks a major development in the Kingdom’s energy sector and highlights the continuous growth and expansion of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas resources.
Details of the Discoveries
New Unconventional Oil Fields
Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman revealed that the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) has successfully discovered two notable unconventional oil fields:
- Al-Ladam Oil Field: Located in the Eastern Region, the Al-Ladam field has been a significant discovery. The Ladam-2 well within this field is producing very light Arabian oil at a robust rate of 5,100 barrels per day. Additionally, this production is complemented by a substantial gas output of about 4.9 million standard cubic feet per day. The discovery of the Al-Ladam oil field underscores Saudi Aramco’s capability to tap into unconventional oil reserves, further diversifying its resource base.
- Al-Furooq Oil Field: This field, also situated in the Eastern Region, was identified through the Al-Furooq-4 well. It is producing very light Arabian oil at a rate of 4,557 barrels per day. Alongside this, it is yielding approximately 3.79 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. The discovery of Al-Furooq highlights the potential for further oil extraction and gas production in the Eastern Region, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s position as a major player in the global oil market.
Light Arabian Oil Reservoir
- Unaizah B/C Reservoir: Found in the Mazalej area of the Eastern Region, this reservoir has shown promising results. The Mazalej-62 well in this reservoir is producing light Arabian oil at a rate of 1,780 barrels per day, along with around 0.7 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. This discovery is crucial for enhancing Saudi Arabia’s oil output and meeting the growing energy demands both domestically and internationally.
Significant Natural Gas Fields
In addition to the oil discoveries, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced the identification of several significant natural gas fields in the Empty Quarter:
- Al-Jahq Field: This field was discovered in the Empty Quarter, with natural gas flowing from two different reservoirs in the Al-Jahq-1 well. The Arab-C reservoir is producing natural gas at a rate of 5.3 million standard cubic feet per day, while the Arab-D reservoir contributes 1.1 million standard cubic feet per day. The discovery of Al-Jahq Field highlights the potential for substantial natural gas production, which is essential for diversifying Saudi Arabia’s energy portfolio and supporting global energy needs.
- Al-Katuf Field: Also located in the Empty Quarter, this field was discovered with the Al-Katuf-1 well, which is producing natural gas at a rate of 7.6 million standard cubic feet per day. In addition to this, the field is yielding about 40 barrels per day of condensates. The discovery of the Al-Katuf Field represents a significant addition to Saudi Arabia’s natural gas reserves, providing a critical resource for both domestic consumption and international export.
- Hanifa Reservoir: This reservoir, discovered in the Assikara field in the Empty Quarter, is notable for its gas production. The Assikara-6 well is yielding natural gas at a rate of 4.9 million standard cubic feet per day from the Hanifa reservoir. Additionally, the well is also producing gas from the Al-Fadhili reservoir at a rate of 0.6 million standard cubic feet per day, along with approximately 100 barrels per day of condensates. This discovery further enhances Saudi Arabia’s capability to meet the increasing global demand for natural gas and supports the Kingdom’s strategic energy goals.
Minister’s Statement and Acknowledgements
In his announcement, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman expressed gratitude and extended his congratulations to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince for their support and the achievements realized. He acknowledged the significance of these discoveries as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to advancing its energy sector and maintaining its status as a leading global producer of oil and gas.
The discoveries are seen as a significant boost to Saudi Arabia’s energy industry, showcasing the Kingdom’s continued success in exploring and developing its vast oil and gas resources. This achievement not only reinforces Saudi Arabia’s position as a dominant force in the global energy market but also underscores the Kingdom’s role in ensuring energy security and stability worldwide.
Strategic Implications and Future Prospects
The announcement of these discoveries holds substantial strategic implications for Saudi Arabia’s energy sector. The new oil and gas fields are expected to enhance the Kingdom’s production capacity, contribute to its energy exports, and strengthen its position in the global market. The exploration and development of these fields reflect Saudi Aramco’s expertise in tapping into unconventional resources and maximizing production efficiency.
Moreover, the discoveries will likely lead to increased investment and development in the energy sector, with potential impacts on the regional and global energy landscape. The expansion of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas reserves will support the Kingdom’s long-term energy strategy, which focuses on maintaining its leadership in the energy sector while adapting to global market changes and demands.
