RTA’s AED 332Million Umm Suqeim Street Project Enhances Dubai’s Connectivity

RTA's AED 332 Million Umm Suqeim Street Project: Elevating Dubai's Connectivity and Traffic Flow

In alignment with the visionary directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at enhancing infrastructure to accommodate the city’s growth, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has embarked on the Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project. This AED 332 million initiative, closely monitored by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, underscores the commitment to ensuring smooth traffic flow and addressing urban and population needs.

The Umm Suqeim Street Project spans 4.6 kilometers, stretching from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It plays a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity between east-west transverse streets and north-south vertical streets. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized the project’s significance in complementing RTA’s ongoing efforts to improve the city’s transportation corridors.

The project builds upon the completion of the widening of Umm Suqeim Street in 2013, which included the construction of two bridges and pedestrian bridges, contributing to the infrastructure leading to the Dubai Hills Mall project. The current phase aims to further elevate the street’s efficiency by upgrading the intersection with Al Barsha South Street, incorporating an 800-meter-long tunnel with four lanes in each direction.

“The Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project is strategically designed to enhance connectivity across major traffic corridors, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. It is anticipated to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly reducing travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes,” explained Al Tayer.

The project serves key residential and development areas, such as Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, collectively hosting an estimated population of about two million people. Its comprehensive scope includes the construction of signalized surface intersections, ensuring a smoother traffic flow and enhancing accessibility in the surrounding regions.

The RTA has meticulously planned the project to not only ease traffic congestion but also to improve pedestrian access. The initial phase, completed in 2013, involved the construction of two 3-lane bridges and three pedestrian bridges. These enhancements facilitated better connectivity between Al Quoz and Al Barsha.

In 2020, RTA achieved a significant milestone by opening a central 500-meter bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to Dubai Hills Mall Project. This bridge, situated at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and the entrances of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha, boasts four lanes in each direction and can handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, further contributing to the city’s robust transportation network.

As Dubai continues its journey as a global hub, the Umm Suqeim Street Project stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to innovation, infrastructure development, and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents and visitors. The project not only addresses current traffic challenges but also sets the stage for sustained growth and urban development in the years to come.
