Qatar Retains Asian Cup, Defeats Jordan with Afif Hat-Trick, All from Penalties

Qatar's Glory: Afif's Penalty Hat-Trick Seals Asian Cup Triumph

DOHA (AFP): Hosts Qatar secured victory in the Asian Cup with a 3-1 win against surprise contenders Jordan on Saturday, as Akram Afif showcased a remarkable hat-trick of penalties.

The triumph marked a fitting conclusion to a month-long journey of football that commenced with 24 competing teams and witnessed a series of riveting matches and a plethora of goals.

This victory also serves to offset the memories of Qatar’s disappointing performance in the 2022 World Cup, where they suffered losses in all three games, marking the worst record of any host in the competition’s history.

The 27-year-old Afif emerged as the hero of the day, maintaining his composure to convert three penalty kicks amidst mounting pressure. His decisive contributions secured Qatar’s triumph, earning him the title of the tournament’s best player and top scorer with eight goals.

Afif’s teammates jubilantly tossed him into the air at the final whistle, celebrating his pivotal role in their victory. Reflecting on his performance, Afif humbly remarked, “It’s about the feeling that the team and people are behind me.”

In contrast, Jordan found themselves in their inaugural Asian Cup final, marking a historic milestone for the team. Despite their underdog status and being ranked 87th in FIFA’s world rankings, they demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the tournament.

The match saw Qatar take the lead midway through the first half, with Afif calmly converting a penalty after being fouled in the box. Jordan, however, managed to level the score through Yazan Al-Naimat’s skillful finish, igniting hopes of a potential upset.

Yet, Afif’s clinical precision from the penalty spot proved decisive once more, with Qatar reclaiming the lead shortly after Jordan’s equalizer. Despite Jordan’s valiant efforts, Afif’s hat-trick sealed Qatar’s victory, leaving no room for a comeback.

Qatar’s victory was a testament to their resilience and strategic prowess, underscored by the appointment of Spanish coach Tintin Marquez merely a month before the tournament. Marquez’s astute leadership and the players’ execution of his plans were instrumental in Qatar’s success.

As the curtain falls on the Asian Cup, the tournament will be remembered for its unexpected twists and turns, with Japan’s early exit and Jordan’s remarkable journey serving as prominent highlights. Despite the absence of a dramatic upset in the final, the tournament showcased the resilience and spirit of Asian football
