Prime Minister Narendra Modi held key bilateral meetings with the presidents of Uzbekistan and the UAE during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. This summit brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to strengthen their collective influence on the global stage.

Meeting with Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan

Modi and Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the president of Uzbekistan, met with the aim of strengthening economic, digital technology, health, and cultural relations as well as trade. When talking about upcoming initiatives, both leaders placed a strong emphasis on capacity building and networking. Additionally, they decided to cooperate at international fora in order to bolster the voice of the Global South, which consists of developing nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter) to express his excitement for the talks.

Meeting with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates

In a post on X, Modi referred to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as his “brother” after their meeting. Trade, energy, and investment connections between India and the UAE have grown quickly. Considering that the UAE recently joined BRICS, indicating a change in global dynamics, this meeting further strengthened their strategic partnership. The influence of BRICS has expanded with the admission of additional members, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Significance of the BRICS Summit The 16th BRICS Summit represents a pivotal moment, with the group now representing 24% of the global GDP and 41% of the world’s population. As BRICS expands, it positions itself as an alternative to Western-centric institutions, with India playing a leading role in shaping this evolving global order.
