UAE’s ‘Hayat’ Organ Donation Program Achieves Major Milestones

The UAE’s national organ donation programme, Hayat, has made significant progress, with more than 32,700 registered donors across the country and more than 1,200 organs successfully transplanted. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) highlighted the milestone during a Ramadan Majlis held in Dubai, which was attended by senior officials and health leaders.

Promoting a Culture of Organ Donation

The Majlis provided a forum for discussing ways to encourage organ donation in the United Arab Emirates, and it was presided over by Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security.
The Hayat Project’s role, the humanitarian effects of organ transplantation, and the necessity of solid public-private collaborations in fostering medical innovation were among the main subjects of conversation.

In addition to emphasizing the value of healthy lives in enhancing donor eligibility, experts underlined the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology into awareness efforts.

Strong Leadership Support

Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan praised the UAE’s government for prioritizing public health first and encouraging a giving culture. He pointed out that organ donation supports unity between Emiratis and foreigners and is consistent with Islamic principles and the UAE’s Year of Community program.

“This initiative is more than just a program; it is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to humanitarianism and a step toward building a more sustainable and compassionate future,” he stated.

National and Global Recognition

Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary of Health Regulations at MoHAP, underscored the UAE’s status as a regional and global model for organ donation.
He revealed that public engagement with the Hayat program has significantly increased, leading to a 30% rise in post-mortem organ donations in 2024 compared to 2023. The UAE now records 11.6 post-mortem donors per million people—a number that continues to grow with widespread community support.

“The Hayat program is not just a healthcare initiative—it is a national success story, built on our leadership’s forward-thinking vision and our community’s generosity,” said Al Amiri.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Dr. Ali Abdulkarim Al Obaidli, Chairman of the National Committee for Organ Transplantation, outlined key milestones of the Hayat program, noting that 32,704 donors have registered, with 331 total organ donors and 1,216 successful transplants.
A total of 1,167 patients have received life-saving transplants, showcasing the UAE’s commitment to medical excellence and the transformative impact of organ donation on individuals and families.

Future Goals and Innovations

Moving forward, the UAE aims to further develop its organ donation infrastructure, enhance its operational systems, and align its standards with global best practices.
MoHAP is dedicated to expanding public awareness campaigns, strengthening healthcare partnerships, and improving access to life-saving transplant procedures.

With ongoing advancements in AI-driven healthcare solutions, the Hayat program is set to redefine organ donation in the UAE, offering hope, dignity, and new beginnings to countless patients in need.
