Kerala Reports Second Case of Monkeypox: 29-Year-Old Man Returns from UAE

A second case of monkey pox (Mpox) has been reported in Kerala after a 29-year-old man who returned from the United Arab Emirates was tested in Ernakulam, Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed on Friday.

“He recently came to the state from abroad with symptoms. He is currently admitted to a private hospital in Kochi and his condition is stable,” George told reporters.

After the state reported its first Mpox case on September 18, the state health department said a 38-year-old man from Malappuram who had returned from the United Arab Emirates tested positive for the disease.

He was admitted to the Government Hospital in Manjeri for medical treatment and is currently in stable condition, the health officials have confirmed that the variant of Mpox found in the 38-year-old was ‘Clade 1B’. Outbreak in Africa and other countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency in Africa caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV) in August.

Monkeypox virus is a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Orthopoxvirus and has two distinct clades, according to the United Nations.

Commencing in 2022, the global ‘clade 1b’ outbreak persists to this day. Person to person transmission of the infection occurs, particularly through intimate contact. Common signs of the illness include headache, fever, sore throat, muscle soreness, and enlarged lymph nodes.
